Mentorship

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17 NIV). God uses the people in our lives to shape and grow us. We see this every day at Rain Tree Clinic. As our students and staff learn and work alongside each other, they teach, encourage, challenge, and strengthen each another in humility. Daily discipleship is their DNA. Susan Biasco, volunteer Education Instructor, shares how she sees Dr. Hsar, Medical Director, live this out :

Mentorship

By Susan Biasco, Education Instructor

This week Dr. Mitch sent us an article on the benefits of mentorship. I think mentorship is the cornerstone of our program here at Rain Tree Clinic. The upper-level students mentor the lower-level students, the doctors mentor the PA grads and students, and the teachers mentor their students at lectures, meetings, and everyday life.

I can honestly say that I have learned a lifetime of lessons in my 4 years of living in the jungle. I have learned from the students; I have learned from the peripheral staff who cook our food, manage our books, shipments and transportation, man our gates, relay our radio messages and maintain our beautiful campus; I have learned from the villagers; I have learned from my fellow teachers; I have learned from our Stronghold ambulance service members, our PA graduates, and from campus leadership.

But the person that I get the most inspiration from is our Rain Tree Medical Director, Dr. Hsar—or in Karen jungle lingo, Bling Bling Paw.

Dr. Hsar is a husband to one of our nurses, the beautiful Naw Dah, and a father to one of our cherished little ones, Naw Paw Mu Kher, or as she is known on campus, Bling Bling. He is a surgeon, teacher, and campus medical director.

In addition to doing surgery and caring for a full case load of patients, Dr. Hsar also teaches many of our medical classes. I have also seen him facilitating an online ultrasound simulation program, doing class reviews before student exams, and doing post-exam material reviews. Dr. Hsar comes to every church service—singing and preaching in many of them. He also comes to all the Sunday after-service house Bible studies. He is at every meeting online and on campus—and there are A LOT of meetings. We recently sat together at a local village celebration with a big group of our students, enjoying the food and drinks being generously offered by our host.

I have never seen Dr. Hsar angry. I have never seen him frustrated. I have never seen him hurried. I have never seen him impatient. I have seen him walking around campus with Bling Bling in the afternoons watching the students play cane ball and football like he had not a care in the world beyond his young daughter.

I have seen Dr. Hsar tired and I have seen Dr. Hsar sick, but I have never heard a complaint. Just last week we were eating lunch together and I know he currently has a throat issue, but then with a big Dr. Hsar grin he said something like—I wasn’t going to eat because it hurts, but I am eating anyway.

This is going to be something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. With a big smile on my face I am going to stand up to the hard things and say, I know it hurts, but I am going to do it anyway.

“Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave to all.”
Mark 10:43-44

Dr. Hsar will always be first in my memories of Rain Tree Clinic.
