Medical Consulting
Earth Mission is helping medical doctors and professionals to serve in South and South East Asia in three ways.
In the Field: Both short term (weeks) and long term (years) commitments in the field have been supported. These volunteers from US, UK, New Zealand and Australia have provided onsite teaching and professional assistance in primary healthcare as well as in more specialized areas such as ophthalmology, anesthesiology and emergency trauma care.
From their Homes: Using the internet, Earth Mission has also helped link skilled medical consultants practicing in the West with medics in remote jungle situations.
In nearby Tertiary Centers: Some patients have needs beyond the scope of a remote setting. Earth Mission has supported bringing a select few patients to doctors in nearby tertiary centers for the care otherwise not available in their areas. This involves a significant financial and time commitment on the part of our field teams as often these patients have few resources and the typical large medical referral complex is completely foreign to their experience.
Examples of Consulting Doctors:
- Dr. Rich Brown and his family from Arkansas spent two weeks in Gilgit, Pakistan, assisting with eye surgeries and providing teaching input related to special cataract problems.
- Dr. Peter Graham is an Australian ophthalmologist with a long history of volunteer work throughout Asia. Dr. Peter came to volunteer at the Gilgit Eye Hospital in 1997, helping to provide medical training and instruction in cataract and lid surgery. When it came time to begin to provide eye care inside Burma, Peter was there to stimulate the donation of medical equipment, to give encouragement and to provide medical expertise.
